Plaintiff Guillermina Ramirez instituted this action against defendant City of Redondo Beach (City) to recover damages for personal injuries she sustained in an automobile collision allegedly caused by a dangerous condition of a public roadway. Following a pretrial hearing, the trial court denied the City's motion for design immunity pursuant to Government Code section 830.6*fn1 and ruled against it on several vital evidentiary issues. The jury subsequently returned a special verdict assessing plaintiff's damages at $4.5 million and apportioning 80 percent of the fault for the accident to City. The court thereafter entered judgment in the sum of $3.6 million. Defendant's motions for judgment notwithstanding the verdict and new trial were denied, and this appeal followed.
